The Sony Ericsson W705 is a mid-range music-centric handset sporting a brilliant 2.4-inch QVGA display. The chassis is heavily inspired by the W880i, sharp lines with brushed aluminium on the front and sides, subtle gold trim and a rubberized back panel. The button layout is conventional Sony Ericssonish, with a navigation D-pad and control keys laid out in slick grooved circular array for enhanced finger-tapping accuracy.
The primary music player controls are with in navigation pad, although there's a tiny Walkman key on the top for activating the player and initiating the Shake Control feature. The handset utilises the built in accelerometer to auto-orient the display during web navigation and certain multimedia functions.
The W705 ships with a high-fidelity Clear Bass, Clear Stereo premium headphones which delivers sound quality in its purest form. The Shake control function lets you jump, skip and adjust the volume by simple swish.It lets you create playlists based on mood with SensMe. The W705 supports both Wi-Fi and HSUPA turbo 3G.
The handset allows shortcut access to Wi-Fi via the Activity Menu using a hotkey in the control panel. It also lets you fast-track to other useful functions, like Bluetooth, Google Maps, TrackID or the phone's browser.
The Walkman player comes with a intuitive UI, with a familiar collection of track categories - including theSensMe option that can be used to select tracks by mood and tempo. There's no 3.5mm headphone socket but you can buy a Sony Ericsson 3.5mm adaptor and use a two-part headset lead to plug in your own higher quality ear-wear.The handset has 120 MB of onboard memory, and supports up to 8 GB microSD cards. It supports a range of data tranfer modes, using USB cable and Media Manager software, drag-and-dropping in Mass Storage mode, or Bluetooth.
The camera sports the same UI as its Cyber-shot brethren, but as with Walkman series phones, the 3.2-megapixel(with LED flash) camera does not support the all-round shooting ability of Sony Ericsson's photo-centric handsets. It has a fixed focus lens rather than using an autofocus system, and can take shots good snaps in good lighting conditions. Uploading images and video online form the handset is extremely easy, thank to Sony Ericsson supplementing its standard Blogger upload option. You can shoot QVGA videos at 15fps, and upload them directly onto YouTube using a pre-loaded app. The handset supports geo-tagging, but the lack of GPS support means you will have to rely on less accurate cellsite triangulation.
